My friend Jackie just posted this article and last week I saw the video of Tim Gunn posted below, it got me thinking I should write a bit of a post about bullying and share my thoughts on the subject. Since my blog is getting a lot of attention this week for Philadelphia Fashion Week posts it seemed like a good time to mix in something for people to read.

To those kids out there in high-school land being bullied, hang in there. It's tough I know, but in the end it all does come around. You will almost never read a bio about a rockstar, actor/actress, supermodel, fashion designer, artist, film director, that wasn't bullied in high school. The people that shape and mold the very culture we live in today; were 9 times out of 10 bullied in high school. They pick on you for not being the norm, sometimes that comes from just being mean spirited, sometimes it's THEM trying to fit in with their own group of friends, sometimes it's just ignorance, and sometimes, often, it's jealousy. It's people who are expected to be the norm (by friends, family, etc) and feel trapped in the fact that they aren't allowed to be different; lashing out at those who are.

Creative people, gay/strait, non conformists, Goths, Punks, Artsy types, often times models, obviously photographers, tend to strive to be unique; and unique means you're not like everyone else. PRIDE YOURSELF ON THAT! While in a culture of high school it's hard to be different, uniqueness isn't respected or desired, you just have to know in your heart, that you don't want to be like them, you have more to offer the world then that.

I wasn't bullied in High school, but in Middle school I was all the time. 8th Grade was particularly helllacious, and to make matters worse I was pretty much bullied by what was technically my own circle of friends. I remember one day in science class someone stood up for me. I was being picked on and Bill Duff (who is still one of my friends) stepped in and told the kid off, threatened him and he never picked on me again. Bill was my hero that day and has since become a hero to many others; playing in the NFL, acting, and as co-host on the History Channel's show "Human Weapon". I guess if you're going to have someone step in and fight for you, a Human Weapon is the way to go. Highly recommend that.

In high school I wasn't bullied, here's why.... Most of my graduating class were friends with each other, my friends and I were metalhead/musician /rocker types so we naturally gravitated toward the older musician rocker types in our school. We became friends with all the upper classman and they looked out for us. Only time anyone ever picked on me my friend Derrick Matina (huge tough long hair guy you didn't want to fuck with) stepped in and nearly through the kid through a locker. I always had people looking out for me, it always meant a lot. When I got into my sophomore year, etc, I always made friends with the incoming class, passed it along. My circle had grown into their own as future rock-stars and although we weren't "the cool kids", jocks or anything like that, we still had respect and we're friends with all the cool kids despite us not wanting to fit in with them.

Once out of school I found the Goth Scene, and always strived to repeat the same patterns... get to know the old school, raise the new school. Learning the ropes and then passing them along to the next generation. I've always done this and feel like it's one of the reasons I've always been surrounded by friends. If you're in middle or high school right now and feel like there's no one like you, take a look around, every class seems to have some outcasts, gays, lesbians, goths, punks, artsy types; your looking at the worlds future rockstars, directors, supermodels, fashion designers, fashion elite, superstars... go meet them, get to know the people in the grade above you, below you, ban together and unite.

For those of you out there who see bullying in schools, step in. Do something about it if you're one of the cool kids, tough kids, out cast yourself, help out those who need it. You'll never stop kids from being assholes, but you sure can put a stop to that one kid picking on that other one, and that's all that matters.

Philadelphia Fashion Week (Day 2) -The future

I’ve always felt that Philadelphia Fashion Week, being somewhat new to the scene , has a challenging but exciting opportunity in front of it. New York has always been the place for the world’s eyes to converge when it comes to releasing new collections and promoting this billion dollar Industry. Philadelphia, although a hop skip and jump from NYC, was largely ignored. Over the past few years I’ve as a fashion photographer in Philadelphia my biggest challenge was always finding clients willing to hire outside NYC to shoot things like magazine spreads, look books, web content, catalog, ad campaigns; the bread and butter of a fashion photographers existence just simply didn’t have a huge market in Philly. Most of the larger designers here; Nicole Miller, Sailor Jerry, Urban Outfitters , Anthropologie, etc all tended to shoot in NYC. The magazines tended to use NYC models and getting to be one of the Photographers for Philadelphia magazine or Philly Style just seemed nearly impossible. I’ve often joked that I’ll be published in Italian Vogue before Philly Style returns my email. .. But with Philadelphia Fashion Week 2010 it seems like all that could change, and change quickly.

PFW has an opportunity to showcase up and coming superstars and position themselves (To NYC and the rest of the world) as the place to really find what’s happening before it happens. To make the discovery.

Last year one of the designers that showcased at PFW 2009 was S Love clothing, who later changed their name to just Sally Lapointe. Sally is an NYC designer and she chose PFW for her first debut of her collection; this year she premiered the 2010 collection at Mercedes Benz Fashion Week in NYC. She got amazing press coverage, was on NY Mag.com’s 9 designers to watch list, all over youtube, etc. She’s really blowing up. It all started in Philadelphia.

I think as the event grows, the bigger magazines, buyers, showrooms, and design houses will start to realize that Philadelphia is where you go to truly see what’s next. The Collections and talent start here and if you weren’t there to see it, you’re just behind the times, which in fashion is death.

Unlike MBFW, Philadelphia has everyone localized in one place. You aren’t going to miss some hot new line because Zac Posen or Chanel did their show at the same time across town, which is what happens in NYC every year.

Last night’s show was amazing. The models from Wilhelmina ALL were spot on perfect, everyone walk by every model was just great. The makeup, hair, styling all amazing as they owned the runway.

The showcase last night featured designers from all the local fashion schools; Moore College, University of Delaware, Philadelphia University, Drexel University, and Art Institute of Philadelphia. Last spring I shot the senior shows for Drexel and Moore so those collections had some familiar pieces in them for me and some of the models, but for the audience obviously they were new. One after another these colleges provided amazing fashion, innovation, design and skill. My only real complaint was the anonymity of it all. At times it felt like the schools were being showcased more than the actual fashion designers because their names weren’t individually broadcast, which I am not really even sure how they COULD have done that with so many different designers, but it’s something to definitely work on for next year. While having every designer present and credited on the runway would be a logistical nightmare, not having them there just doesn’t seem right either because people that love the outfits don’t exactly know who designed it other than the college they attended. Rather than post all my favorite moments due to not having all the designers names I’ve decided to just mix it up and show you highlight shots. Some of the designers I recognized having shot Moore and Drexel before, so Neel Elsherif, Leah Boston, Riona Faith O'Malley and Joanna Holmes (Whose outfits also appear on my newest flier – Shot of Masha and Alyson) were already credited online. NYC buyers, show rooms, magazines, stylists; if you’re reading this, you have an opportunity here in Philadelphia every year to see what’s next before your competition does, come down and see the Future of Fashion, where innovation, talent and overwhelming passion for this Industry is fresh, alive and setting the runway ablaze!

Philadelphia Fashion Week (Day 1) - Ican'thascheeseburger

The first night of Philadelphia Fashion Week 2010 went really well. I arrived early (2pm) as I am shooting for both Wilhelmina Philadelphia and for the event coordinators as a staff photographer for Philadelphia Fashion Week this year and I wanted to get a lay of the land, take some extra time to get comfortable just floating around the building, etc.

There’s a certain buzz you feel before an exciting event like this too, I love it.

I hung out with my PFW friends and Wilhelmina family, made the chit-chat, talked up the new site a bit (I just redid fashionandadvertising.com, go check it out --- BRAND NEW STUFF!!) and showed off the new postcards I had just picked up from M3Printing (great job guys!)

Smoked a bunch of cigarettes.
Lamented about the apparent lack of Cheeseburger sliders this year.
Then the doors opened and the crowds started to gather.

First up was Delicious Boutique, who I guess I’ve been shooting since 2002 so I was kinda glad I got to warm up with someone I already knew really well. The models looked awesome and as always Delicious collections are impressive. If you haven’t been to their store in Northern Liberties you really should go. While you’re there, also get your hair did by Camille at DNA Salon and some fudge from the candy store, but I am going off topic. The Delicious show concluded with a military style inspired jumpsuit with a bunny ear hoodie. I gotta say, kinda liked it.

Next up was Lolliepop, whose collection was a mix of Denim pieces, jackets, skirts, etc. Generally speaking I hate denim, but some of these were done extremely well and in innovative ways that made me actually like them. The outfit that Kel Taylor was wearing was definitely a standout for me and actually took denim to an editorial fashion feel.

Ban Thor Phan and Kampanart Buahombora were up next with a heavily Middle Eastern/ Indian inspired collection modernized for with a western fashion twist while still holding strong to the inspiration. My favorites here were modeled by Donald Letts and Jordana, who looked like a modern Egyptian Queen in her flowing cream toned dress.

Up next was a Aerial dance performance by the troupe “Junk”, not really my thing but while I was shooting I noticed the shadows on the wall they were creating were amazing so I started shooting them as well and gotta say I loved the results.

I try not to complain too much in these blogs, but yeah I got really bored as the break was a bit too long and the cheeseburger sliders were not in attendance. I smoked a bunch of cigarettes and did have a great time chatting with Anita (Wilhelmina) , her sister (whose name I forgot- DOH!), photographer Jenny, and Lisa Nocera (MUA). I think www.icanhascheeseburger.com should be a sponsor next year. Just saying and maybe those Hot pocket Mini burgers, or get the cheeseburger people from last year back.

After the break it was time for Arcadia & Bus Stop Boutiques, who started out with some rather sexy swimwear and shoes/boots from Bus Stop. More of this would be good. As a boutique the show didn’t have as much consistency of a label or line but all their pieces looked great. I loved some of the Knits and again Kel’s outfit rocked. It was hard to get a good angle to shoot the end looks of the runway due to heads in the front row, so for the shoes shots I mostly got walking stuff and kept the end of runway pose shots as close-ups.

Next up was Carmelita Couture, who was my favorite collection of the night and a great show closer. Modern, Urban, Hip, sleek, sexy and gaga-ish at times, this was a very wearable but impressive collection for those that want to buy some pieces with “oomph” that they’ll actually be able to wear out to places other than other fashion shows. The whole collection felt very Brooklyn meets Milan to me. The piece that didn’t fit too well with the cohesiveness of the collection was actually one of my favorites, the purple top/skirt that Masha wore was just striking and she was styled perfectly from head to toe to match.

Had a great time and can’t wait to see the students of Drexel University, Art Institute, Moore College, University of Delaware, Philadelphia University tomorrow. Remember the show is earlier at 5pm (4:45 doors) so get your tickets now at Philadelphiafashionweek.org and come say yo.

After getting into Inked girls I decided to try again with LeeAnna, though we didn't make it in this time (Congrats to Kencredible, who did) I love this set too much to not share. LeeAnna has what is probably my favorite tattoo piece, which is her ENTIRE leg, front and back. It's amazing work. She's also stunningly gorgeous and loves Faith No More and Mr Bungle, what more could you ask for?

Most of this set was nude and I have been avoiding blogging nude images due to the fact that this blog is linked on my family-friendly/ commercial site (Jeffcohnphoto.com). But I love these shots so I decided to upload a censored version.

Desalle and I shot all night till we were both totally wiped out, as I tend to do on night shoots, she was a trooper and has a look I just love. The shot below was an experimental series shot by jerking the camera right at the last second to capture motion with a slightly long exposure.

Lauren and I have shot together several times since early in her career. She's one of my favorite people to shoot and usually crashes on my couch during the duration of her trips to Philly. We never really have a solid plan whenever we shoot, just wing it and hope for gold. This time however we had makeup artist Andrea Martini and wardrobe stylist Belle Morte asking to join us so we jumped at the opportunity to work with such talent. They did an amazing job and we were thrilled with the outcome.

The other half of our shoots we did on our own, which yielded this black and white series that I absolutely love.

So I've decided to re-activate my blog, which I got rather behind with last December and stopped updating. I feel the best way to do this is to just go through my work by date and blog about everything you missed over this time. What a fun event. This was a charity event fashion show just before Xmas for Evoluer House, a great organization for young black women in need.

Nolé Marin from America's Next Top Model was there as well as Diva singer Sarah Dash, and an assortment of movers and shakers in the Philadelphia community. The event coordinator Cherly Ann Wadlington from evoluer consultants did an excellent job organizing this event.

One of the coolest models I've ever had the pleasure of shooting, miss Alysha Nett was on my favorites list on Modelmayhem for a while. The problem is she lives in Kansas, so I suspected I'd never have a chance to work with her. Lo and behold I get an email one day telling me she's coming to town!

Had a great time working with her. She's got one of my favorite hair styles and reminds me a bit of a cross between Agyness Deyn (supermodel) and 80's teen icon Mary Stuart Masterson in the movie Some Kinda wonderful, all with great ink.

The next day we went to a nice breakfast with Jerry Bennett and she did some kick ass work with him as well.

Jeantrix Fashion Show

Late December I was invited to shoot the Jeantrix fashion show by a few of my friends that we're modeling in the show. While I can't claim this was my favorite show I've seen, the designs were innovative and very creative. Some worked, some didn't. I like the fact that people are trying and that there is room for an avant garde designer show in Philadelphia. I'd like to see more of these. The models were all great and the location was really cool to shoot in.

Inked Girls Magazine

A few months ago I got an email from the editors of Inked magazine asking me to submit some shots for their special Inked Girls issue. As a huge fan of Inked I jumped at the chance and immediately scheduled a shoot with two of my favorite heavily tattooed models; Key and Fische.

As with any magazine submission you never really know if you'll actually get published, you just hope a lot and do the best you can. I was thrilled to find out that one of my shots made this issue. I submitted a lot more than this and decided to share some of those with you as well since I am proud of the entire set. Fische and Key both rocked this shoot and hopefully this will just be the first of many tear sheets in this wonderful magazine.

This time they just chose a shot of Key, which sucks for Fische but, I want to throw a big congrats to her for getting published in this month's Bizarre magazine instead! You go girl! This is just the start for all of us and eventually Im sure we'll get to the point where none of even remember what magazines were in till we're at Barnes N Noble. At least that's the goal.

One of the coolest things about being in this issue is that on the contributors page I have a photo and bio along side two of my friends; Steve Prue and Matt Mayes (MojoKiss), being in the same issue of them means a lot to me, so congrats to them and all the other photographers as well.

As you may have noticed I have been slacking on my promise to update my blogs. I am going to attempt to get caught up as a ton of stuff has been happening, so much so that I haven't had time to really blog about it.

Being a commercial photographer I have a wide variety of clients and types of jobs that I shoot. A few months ago I had the pleasure of doing production stills and product shots for a Tv commercial for Debbie Brooks handbags (King of Prussia).

I was supposed to do a test shoot that day with Lorianna Swainn but instead I just brought her to the commercial and she instantly got cast and nailed it.

Robyn Welsh (Jovovich)

This recent retouch from a shoot I did a few months ago with my friend Robyn is definitely one of my favorite new photos. When we did the shoot I commented that it reminded me of Milla Jovovich and now that it's edited I see it even more. Anyone that knows me and my work knows that Milla has always been a huge inspiration and one of my all time favorite models. Her acting work has created some amazing characters as well from Fifth Element, Ultraviolet to Zoolander. So any image that reminds me of her, even a lil bit, I love. Hope you like it as well. I credit Milla as single handedly creating the market and look of a high fashion-alt model and being one of the first supermodels to rock really edgy looks both in film, on the runway and in campaigns.

I also wouldn't mind if someone from Jovovich Hawk (her designer line) saw this blog and hired me to shoot their next collection. Just sayin....

Darlings Diner - "Pie Fashion" with Melissa Mae

With Thanksgiving coming up I had a silly idea for "pie season" to do a high fashion model pie eating contest, well even though the diner loved it and I shot the promotional shots, I just didn't have the time this month to put an event together and do it right. We did however shoot the shots and Darlings Diner was happy to use them for the rest of their Thanksgiving weekend advertising. I know they were published in Star Magazine and online, though i haven't seen the print version yet. The gorgeous Melissa Mae responded to the casting and Darlings supplied the Apple/blueberry pie. This was possibly the messiest shoot I've ever done and easily the tastiest (What didn't hit the floor). My pug hated this shoot due to the fact that he wasn't allowed to be involved.

We wanted to go for a very "High fashion Pie look" and Melissa just rocked it, posing as if she was wearing a $25,000 necklace and designer hat instead of wearing fruit, filling and crust. She gave the pie an elegance and style.

I Haven't forgetten you blogger...

I have been incredibly busy since Philadelphia Fashion Week and have been kinda neglecting my blogging. I apologize and will do my best to get back on track and post regularly from here on.

Here's a bit of an update:

I have been shooting a lot for Debbie Brooks handbags (DebbieBrooks.com) as well as doing several shoots for my favorite hang out spot Darlings Diner (Darlingsdiner.com) in the Piazza. I also just completed a huge commercial fashion shoot for Lock and Mane hair products and accessories (lockandmane.com). Lauren Palmer (makeup artist, stylist extraordinaire ) and I also recently completed a gift bags product shoot for Lock and Mane as well.

During a recent shoot for Jessica Saint and her girls from Sephora make up, my trusty faithful Canon Rebel XT met it's demise. To be fair, a good camera is probably going to give you 100-150k shots in its lifetime and I probably drove it well past 250k. It was due to die. More importantly I was due for an upgrade.

I wanted to buy one from New York Camera Video but I had a shoot coming up and didn't have time to wait for them to get in one used, however Scott from Nycv STILL (even though he stood to gain no money) helped me negotiate my deal from the camera I found on craigslist, made sure I got a quality camera and even offered to go with me to pick it up. I am jaded when it comes to most things in modern society, but I have to say Scott (and all the staff at NYCV.com) really still believe in QUALITY customer service and this is just one of many instances when they went above and beyond to not just keep me as a customer but to make me feel like they truly are more than just a store with photography equipment, they are people who share my passion for the medium to their core. They sell amazing stuff and their knowledge, guidance and customer service is 2nd to none. I recommend them HIGHLY to everyone I know, professional or amateur, who is interested in buying any type of photography, video or related equipment. I found a wedding photographer (Conrad Erb) who was selling a Canon 5D, which is now my new baby. Conrad was also a great guy, took the time to walk me through the changes from the XT to the 5D and really also went beyond just a guy selling a camera to another. Thank you.

To complete the upgrade I felt it was also time to move onto new lighting. I purchased a used set of Novatron strobe lights over the summer for a mere $55, knowing they'd be a good introduction to strobes but probably wouldn't last very long and I felt that it was time to move up a notch. This week I received my brand new Alien Bees 800s. I bought two of them and love them to death. I've been busily doing test shoots for the past few days to learn all the ins and outs of all the new equipment.

At the same time my roommate (Angelrift photography) and I decided now that our neighbors have moved out and cleaned all their crap out of our shared basement, that perhaps we should clean it up and use it as a new shoots space, possibly even rent it out to photographers that need indoor locations. We completed that project earlier in the week and now have the main basement (about 5 different walls or corners to shoot on) as well as THREE mini storage rooms that are perfect lil sets for photo shoots. I am currently looking for Interior Design students who want free work from a pro photographer in trade for creating mini shoot locations in those rooms. I also worked two events for Advertising/Communication Times ; A business card exchange mixer and then an advertising trade show. Both events were a lot of fun and well attended and gave me a chance to mingle and hopefully strengthen my relationships with the modeling agencies I am currently shooting for. Though having them both in the same room at the same time proved to be a bit nerve wracking to say the least.

This weekend I was asked to do a submission shoot for Inked Magazine on Saturday, which I am shooting both Fische and Key for, then Sunday I am shooting production stills and modeling shots to appear in a TV commercial for Debbie Brooks handbags. I was supposed to do a test shoot with the amazingly beautiful Lorianna Swain, but the Debbie Brooks people liked her look and will just use her in the commercial instead. That girl just keeps blowing up it seems.

I will be posting tons of images soon, my goal is to release and blog about one shoot a day for at least the next two weeks, I may keep it to weekdays, we'll see. Stay tuned.

The show seriously rocked

There was so much going on so I am going to keep this post picture-heavy and kinda skimp on the recap a bit. I will say that this entire event from start to finish was a true honor to be a part of. The people I met, the performances, runway, buzz, overall feeling in the room, networking, and excitement through out the entire event was just perfect. It was a pleasure shooting every single look of every single designer through the event and I look forward to working with as many of them as possible in the near future as well.

Philadelphia Fashion Week (PHLFSHNWK) Day Two

There was a buzz in the air and everyone could feel it. Although for some odd reason today was much hotter and more humid then yesterday (though the weather outside wasn't all that different) everyone in the room also felt a certain energy in the air as well. I arrived early and spent most of the night (when I wasn't shooting) talking to designers from Wrath Arcane, Sally from S Love, Matthew Izzo (who was incredibly cool and down to earth and reminded me of someone I'd normally just hang out with), Psydde Delicious, and of course fellow blogger and Fashionista extraordinaire Nikki Moose (DirtyFlaws.com)

Day Two of Philadelphia Fashion Week was off to a brilliant start with showcase's by the students of Philadelphia University. Once again I am convinced that this city is about to be a force to be reckoned with if these students are any indication of the talent brewing for Philadelphia's future Haute Couture lines.

Dramatic lines by all from Dark looks to Wedding, every peice of each of these mini-collections had a "Wow Factor" and one model after another walked out to a audience of gasps, oohs and ahhs. I am not sure of all of the designers names but I believe they were Thomas Dejesus, Althea Pappas, Lourdes Cisneros Madrigal, and Gretchen Harris. I am probably missing at least one as I did not realize they're names were on the screen till half way through the show.

Next up was Street Star Custom Clothing, A hip urban street wear company whose line featured T-shirts binged out with the Seven deadly sins banner-ed across the chest. Wrath and Greed were my favorites, but aren't they always?

Nine Days Jeans followed with a funky and interesting line of denim wear rocked on the runway by Wilhelmina of Pa's finest. All the models looked incredible all night and really showed off what PA has to offer. The press were a buzz from the get-go and these guys and girls never failed to amaze everyone in the house with every single time they took the stage.

Gar De followed next with a line of upscale casual clothing that could be worn easily to almost any event and still impress. I loved their jackets, fall colors and just over all the way the looks were styled and put together. Ready to wear, but definitely a higher taste level then what you'd find on most clothing racks.

Nikki Moose told me to watch out for S Love, I had been talking to the designers for the past two days but nothing prepared me for what was to come. Absolutely my stand out choice for the night I am IN LOVE with S LOVE for sure. This collection was just amazing. Highly stylized and a nice blend of influences from the worlds of Haute Couture, Avant-Garde, Gothic, and Street, every look in this line was just to die for.

The girls all rocked them too, walking in a strange, slow, jagged and unique fashion they added the drama that a line like this requires. Each girl stopping at the end of the runway to pose for the camera's and audience in a memorable and unique fashion. S Love was my personal highlight of the event so far and I really hope to work with them in the near future.

Triple 5 Soul closed out the evening with their line of fresh, young and hip clothing, ready to wear and comfortable. They're looks seemed geared towards the college and youthful market but were still sophisticated enough to be worn by the young at heart as well.

All in all it was an yet another amazing night and I can't thank Wilhelmina enough for hooking me up for this event. It's been thrill after thrill in just two days so far... but alas, I want to get to the show early today to show the models photos from last night so I must depart now and go shoot the last and final day!!

Philadelphia Fashion Week (PHLFSHNWK) Day One

So... Philadelphia finally has a fashion week and I am fortunate enough to be shooting the event for Wilhelmina of Pa, who is the exclusive agency providing models to the event.

I will try and cover all three days in the blog but who knows what the schedule and sanity will allow, plus I have a shoot for Wilhelmina on Sunday so I may just be beat by then.

Onto the show.

The show started off with a great series of collections from students at Moore College of Art and Design, four designers seemed to be represented though I may have miscounted that. Some seriously amazing work. I absolutely loved the wedding gowns and the futuristic steampunky leather work. Very impressive voices that are emerging from this school and if they're any indication of the future of Philadelphia fashion I'd say we're in for some real treats that will continue to emboss on name on the map.

Next up was Palmieri Jeans, who are designing Couture Jeans and plan to launch a very unique brand of one of a kind jeans; custom fit to meet your individual measurements. Very cool stuff geared towards an urban market but accessable to all.

Kill City and Wrath Arcane followed, Kill City has a diverse line from causal wear to street wear, seemingly aimed at the comfort focused young hipster market. While Wrath Arcane has a slightly more sophisticated but still very street oriented line that sometimes seemed preppy, other times urban, other times mixing the two together.

Unfortunately I misread the schedule and didn't realize that Brooklyn Royalty would be walking their line during the band's performance, so I was outside calling my makeup artist for Sunday's shoot and I missed all but their last walk. Sorry guys!

The show closed with our old friends from Delicious Boutique showing off the amazing clothing their store has to offer. It was great to see Delicious's designs on the runway and see them hitting a wider market. Everyone of them looked amazing from the corsets, to the gowns to the Steam punk inspired skirts and accessories. Modern, Vintage and Future all collide with Delicious Boutique's and Corsets.

All in all it was a great night full of some absolutely amazing fashion, great crowd, lots of networking and some stunning models. I can't wait for tonight and Day two. Stay Tuned.

Leah Waddill: Where are you from? Where is most of your work done?

Jeff Cohn: I was born and raised in Delran NJ, which is a small suburb of Philadelphia. I moved to Philly after college and have lived in or around the city for the past ten years.

Most of my work is shot in my home studio located in North East Philadelphia. My living room is converted into a studio space, which provides the best of both worlds; convenient location and I have my TV and DVD’s handy while MUA’s do makeup.

Leah Waddill: Do you travel often for your photography?

Jeff Cohn: My first real gig was tour photographer for the band KMFDM, We did the whole US in 40 days, 36 cities. Since then my travel has been fairly limited. I was co-coordinator/founder of Catwalk Tragedy (Alternative Beauty Pageant) which took me to Orlando and NYC for shows. Other than that I have been very much a homebody, I love Philadelphia but if someone wants to pay me to go visit other places I will gladly jump on a plane.

One of the pleasures of a home-studio is that my pug and kitten are always around, this has actually lead to them both becoming rather good models. Sometimes too good. I warn all my models regardless of their experience level that the dog has SIX years of modeling experience under his belt. He's posed with the models like Nikki Moose, Audrey Kitching, Fische, Mayte, Alyson Allegra, etc and been shot by Jeff Beirman, MojoKiss, Angelrift, Mysefl and a few others....He has 1200+ friends on his myspace page.

The cat has been shot by a few photographers as well and has actually stolen a shot (by Ken Norcross) away from Key and Kellie Taylor...

So when Rebecca said she wanted to pose with the pug I gave her the warnings. She's damn good. I love shooting her, but she learned quickly as she watched Elvis change his pose, expression and often position in every shot that she was out-matched. She does make a really hot prop for them though.

So I don't just shoot hot chicks, I shoot a lot of random stuff for a wide and diverse clientele. This here I believe is the ahi tuna shot during my recent portfolio venture down at the wonderful Darlings Restaurant. Darlings is located in the Piazza in Northern Liberties and is probably one of my favorite places to hang out, do meetings, and just run into random people like Psydde Delicious, Megan Massacre and Kencredible.

I am currently marketing myself to restaurants in search of quality advertising, menu, and web site images to show off their culinary skills.

I just recently went and got myself two new marketing and sales assistants. Tricia (Fashion designer) will be handling fashion, boutique's, designers, and salons, while Maddie (food marketing major) will be focused on commercial business and restaurants.

I am extremely excited to work with both of them and can not wait to get the new print material in their hands!

Something a bit different. I was working on LindsyAnne's images last night while trying to catch up on the two zillion shoots I am behind on, and I got the urge to make the last one all crazy photo-shopped. So i played with layers and blend-modes and filters and liquefy and brushes till I was finally actually happy with the end result.

Reminds me of something I'd see in Clear Magazine, which means I Like it.

The rest of her shoot (what's edited so far) was for my commercial portfolio and her compcards/Portfolio for Wilhelmina of PA. Hopefully they'll like the shots and give me lots of work too.

New Card Designs - What do you think?

So I've been planning new cards for a while and the other day my friend/Model/Graphic Design pal Kellie Taylor came over to help me design the card for JeffCohnPhoto.com. Once that was complete the next task was the more difficult; come up with a card for Fashionandadvertising.com that I'd be happy with. I tend to use my cards for a few months and often times they're my first impression with new clients or potential clients, so I'm very picky and never totally satisfied. I hated my last card.

So here's an unveiling of the new cards (so far). I want your feedback and opinions, I will listen to everyone however I do have specific goals and target markets in mind for each card, as well as reasons I used the colors, images, etc the way I did, but Give me your thoughts and feedback and I'll take it all in before these go to print.

It appears that I only have three people currently following this blog, yet people seem to comment, follow-up and discuss with me in person my entries all the time... so there's a slight discrepancy between people reading the blog and people clicking "Follow this". I'd love to change that. I invite anyone and everyone who is reading this to follow it, share it, re-post it on your face-twit-space's. etc. I want this blog to really grow and evolve. I want your comments and feedback.

I'm also not opposed to holding a blog-only contest for a free shoot (locally) or free print (Nationally) so tell me what you think bloggers, what would you like to see more of here? How am I doing so far? Have you shared this blog with any of your friends? Let's hear ya :)

Where has all the good print gone?

Here are some of my all time favorite Fashion magazines. It seems as if they're all going to be out of print before I actually get to the point where I can shoot for one of them. Maybe, just maybe my local Barnes and Noble just sucks, I'm more than willing to concede that as a possibility , especially since I have been going to the one at the Neshaminy Mall and one only needs to walk around that mall for 10 minutes to know that they have no sense of style or fashion. Or is this the symptom of the larger issue. Are these magazines doing well? Is the internet totally taking over print as a viable format? Have people learned to rely on blogs, websites and the like for Fashion Photography? Unfortunately in many cases it would appear so.

I recently tried to subscribe to Z!nk Magazine, I looked on their site.... the subscription link doesn't work. I sent in a check, it got returned. I emailed and then called only to find out that they currently don't HAVE a subscription house and aren't taking new subscriptions! What the hell is that? So now if I want Zink at my door each month, I have to go to Barnes n Noble and hope they have it in stock still. They probably only order one or two issues per store... so good luck with that.

Ok, So I'm more than happy to buy an issue of Noi.se or Muse instead... Oops, I haven't even seen Noi.se in a store in over a year, when I DID find them I got the last issue. One of the best magazines I've EVER seen, but totally unavailable to the public to purchase. Muse and V have a little bit better circulation, but are still very hit and miss... Another Magazine; I've found once.

I have a subscription to Clear, W, and Vogue...I still barely ever see any issues of Clear. I think their run is now 4 issues a year. It's a shame really.

Whose to blame here? Well YOU ARE. If you love these magazines, If you love seeing the most dramatic eye catching and brilliant fashion photography and models in the world, if you don't want to have to look up a URL and stare at a screen to see it, go to your local book store and DEMAND they start stocking more of these. I know I'm not the only one out there that loves these magazines, they need your help and support. In a time when jobs for models, makeup artists, photographers and stylists are becoming more and more scarce we have to make sure this medium that we love so much doesn't die.

I just watched "I love you man" and I have to say it was one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. I actually laughed to tears in some parts. I highly recommend it if you haven't seen it.

Also wanted to recap from the blog earlier about the Seth Green / Robot Chicken Philadelphia thing. Alicia, Nicole and I went over after Alicia's shoot, about 200 people were there already, ran into Howard (Friend of Seth's from high school that I met at the Meet & Greet last Saturday) and within a few moments we were standing with Seth in the back of the parking lot. He seemed to remember me but it's kinda hard to tell, though he did ask about mutual friends so I guess he did. We discussed doing a shoot together next time he's in town, hopefully that'll happen. Afterwards I ran into Stripes from Haley and Optimus Hymen (Gwar/ Rigor Mortis Revue/ Model) Extra special thank you to Tabitha for telling me about the event!

Second chances ? (a non photography blog)

I have always been one to believe that first impressions are not always accurate, that people make mistakes and deserve forgiveness. I think even in some extreme circumstances people who make amends, show their sorry and try to change deserve a second chance. If you screwed up at work, said the wrong thing to your significant other, if you had a horrible day and treated someone else poorly as a lash out result.... But if you train and fight Pittbull's then bury the dead carcasses of the innocent in your backyard while you're a multi-million dollar successful superstar.... you DO NOT deserve a second chance! Especially not in my city!

Now of course I am talking about the Eagles recent signing of Michael Vick, granted this is not a photography or fashion oriented post, but it is about Philadelphia, it's about respect, and it's about the impression the Philadelphia Eagles (and their fans) subsequently portray to the world. This city is highly centered around it's sports teams and they've always been a source of extreme pride, even when they're losing we stand by them, we support them, we reminiscence about the good times and we look forward to the next parade.

Last year I witnessed one of these parades. The Phillies won the pennant and the whole city came together in a flash instant. I watched Frankford Ave and Cottman Ave explode into a feeling of pure unfiltered bliss. I watched a 19 year old preppy drunk white mall girl run up to a guy who looked a lot like Notorious B.I.G. and high five him in the street as his "gangsta stare" gave way to a little smile. I watched the old, young, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Jewish, Muslim all pour into the streets to celebrate a common source of pride, the Philadelphia Phillie's.

We thought ahead after that night... Could the Flyers, Sixers or Eagles be next? We dreamed big and watched as eventually the other side of the state reminded us that they have talent in Pittsburgh too, some of us even celebrated the Stealers and Penguins winning, just because it was still Pennsylvania... That's pride.

Then yesterday our beloved Eagles betrayed us. I never thought they could really do anything to make me hate them. I never thought our fan-dome would waiver, I mean when they sucked on the field we complained, but we loved them. But Family comes first in this city. My dog is part of my family, and I know most of Philadelphia feels the same way. I am not sure of the numbers but just walking around with your eyes open shows you how many people here have and love their dog. Pittbull's are extremely plentiful as well. This is a city that has Doggy day care's, doggy spa's, upscale doggy treat boutique's, Eagles Jersey's for dogs....

How dare you sign that man Eagles. Signing him wasn't just controversial, it wasn't about giving someone a second chance, it was backstabbing all your fans, the people that loved and supported you and condoning his behavior. Some people deserve a second chance, some deserve life in prison. Michael Vick is the latter. Even if he deserves a chance to try and live amongst society (which I don't feel he does), he SURELY does not deserve to do it in the upper tax bracket's as a celebrity athlete.

Or maybe I am wrong... Maybe this IS the punishment... I mean the Philadelphia fans are known to be the toughest, craziest, most psychotic in the world... The people that through batteries at Santa Clause, the fans that beat up the Buffalo Sabre's.... maybe just maybe the whole point of bringing him here was to have our fans rip him to shreds... I guess that's worth the price of that contract. I'm curious to see how this unfolds... To see how many Pittbulls show up in the Link' parking lot... I personally don't know what the Eagles are thinking but Michael Vick in Philadelphia is unacceptable and embarrassing. My pride in the city is not tarnished, but my love for the Eagles is absolutely damaged forever. I do NOT care if you win the Superbowl. I wont be at that parade.

Let's go Flyers.

It's Tuesday night so i figured I'd write a blog just giving people some insight to a normal week in my work life. Last Saturday I went to the Studio Five Mid-summer Meet n Great in Philadelphia and had the pleasure of seeing some old friends as well as meeting some new ones. I brought my model Robyn Welsh with me as well as my roommate (Angelrift Photography). I had the pleasure of meeting James Mosley and hopefully may be working with him soon to really learn the ins and outs of both commercial and stock photography. He's done some amazing work and is published world wide, has a huge studio space and seems to really love my work.

I also caught up with Fische, Ashley Arsenic, Rachie Tartz and met some newer models that I will hopefully be booking soon.

Wolf Wilson showed me his new sculptured photos project and I have to say I am very impressed, he said he'd be making one for me to keep in the studio of my work and I am very much looking forward to seeing it.

Sunday Maria and Lisa came over for a 3 look shoot (Lisa doing Maria's makeup) and I finally got Maria to ditch the extreme lashes and trust Lisa's talent fully, WOW... She looked absolutely breathtaking and both girls did an amazing job, I can't wait to show you those photos. That girl has a ton of potential and with the right direction I could see her really making herself a name in the Alt modeling scene.

Monday was pretty much editing and pool days, relaxing a lil bit and catching up on rest from last week's hectic schedule because of the shoot special (shot almost every day for 14 days) . I edited a bunch of Mollie's photos for her audition tomorrow for America's Next Top Model and planned out my attack on the rest of the edits. Sorted through photo-sets for Maggie, Caroline, Lyndsey, Mary, and started to work on Kat's.

Tomorrow is my shoot with Alicia, which I am very excited about. She's a newer model but we seem to have a ton in common and she's friends with Nikki Sixx so that's just the awesome. I can't wait to work together and I suspect already it will be the first of many shoots. After the shoot we're going to go over to the Rollerskating rink for the Robot Chicken Star Wars release party where hopefully I can find a way to re-connect with Seth green, whom I grew up with but haven't seen in over 15 years since I went to college and he moved to LA. Maybe if all goes well I'll even set up a shoot with Seth tomorrow if he's got any downtime while he's in town.

Friday I am doing a 2nd shoot with KassieDW, who I used for an idea I wanted to submit to M.A.C. as an ad campaign but never used. She and her friend Morgan (Whom I've also shot) apparently live right around the corner in the neighborhood so it'll be cool to work with her again knowing she lives so close by.

As for right now I am watching the end of "Swords" on Discovery and getting ready for the new episode of "The Colony" which has quickly become one of my favorite new shows.

Saturday I will hopefully be shooting a few of the girls from the M&G, but nothing is confirmed yet, stay tuned!

I got very lucky the other day and was able to purchase a few choice domain names to forward to x-pose.net Photography and it's sister commercial site. I now have Photographer215.com , JeffCohnPhoto.com , JeffCohnPhotography.com and (drum roll please....) FashionandAdvertising.com !

To Celebrate this and promote the new domains I did a huge overhaul to the main site, which is now found at Fashionandadvertising.com as well as being mirrored at X-pose.net. I added TONS of new images to the Fashion Photography Section, added this my blog (For those of you on Facebook reading this, the Fashion Photography blog is called "Deep Focus" and features fashion and commercial photography, my breakdown of some of my favorite photo shoots I've done, and I will be adding more interviews with models - Mosh interview up now- as well as more personal insight to Philadelphia Photography, Modeling and Fashion Locally and world wide. ) I also finally added a new section for Ink and Alternative Photography; This area of the site focuses on Tattoos, Tattooed people, Alternative Fashion and Alt photography.

While the commercial section of the site hasn't drastically changed I did also give it it's standalone page which can be found at JeffCohnPhoto.com , This allows me to market my commercial photography services, product photography, corporate photography, People, events, Runway and catalog Photography to a more family based conservative audience that may find some of the edgier images on FashionAndAdvertising not their particular cup of tea.

I am currently booking shoots and looking for clients of all kinds. If you've got a project you need photography for, I'm your guy. While developing my commercial photography portfolio I decided to enlist the help of my favorite stylist Lauren Palmer, her stuff and her backyard. The inspiration for this shoot came from an editorial set in MUSE magazine. I am extremely proud of the results. I feel that these shots capture the images of products and make them sell able but not in a boring typical way. It almost tells a story and the backyard provides a nice jungle theme. My favorite is the "snake" jewelry which just enhances the jungle theme even further.

This was from a fashion shoot at dog parc studio's last year. Rebecca supplied all the wardrobe, Melody Moher did all the makeup, hair and styling. She did an amazing job.

The models are Rebecca Helen Wales, Jillian Michelle and Leslie Mckenna (who you may recognize from the Mummy series). I shot solo shots as well as these group pics during the course of the day. We did two outfits/looks with each model and the additional shots are available for viewing on my Flickr page.

This style of commercial fashion photography is something I absolutely love doing and would love to do more of with local or national clients that need images for advertising or their catalogue's, online stores, etc.

Fische came over to help me with my tattoo portfolio. It's funny in all my attempts to gear my work to a more commercially oriented audience when I found myself sitting face to face with Tony from Tattoo Society Magazine showing him my portfolio, he pointed out that I didn't have very many images of girls with tattoos. It seemed odd to me since I've shot so many, but my recent work has been very much geared towards a commercial /fashion audience and my printed portfolio probably showcases that more than any of my online ports. So since I still do love and want to shoot tattooed /goth/punk/alterna-beauties I decided I better add an Ink section to my site. I held 2 days of open castings and shot about 10 people. This section will be added to x-pose.net soon and hopefully you'll see my work in tattoo magazines across the country soon after.

Couture Du Jour is a new premium service brought to you by X-pose.net, Jessica Saint Makeup and Lady of Design (Lauren Palmer) makeup.

With these shoots the model is taken to a fabric store in the morning and we as a group select her favorite fabrics, prints, etc. We then brainstorm accessories (if any) and details, go back to the studio and in a very "project runway style" we create the outfit on the spot. Its a group effort and the designs range from high fashion gowns to avant garde creations. Its very unpredictable, unique and fun for everyone involved.

This particular look was a mix of fabrics and a giant piece of foam that Lauren found and put together in a futuristic sci-fi Jean-Paul Gaultier influenced outfit.

Darling Niikkii is one of my new favorite models to work with, not only is she amazing as a model but she's also a great stylist, makeup artist and has a great feel for the artistic vision that I wanted to create. This was from our first (many more to come) shoot together. We were specifically going for a very high fashion meets commercial fashion feel and her Dior sunglasses inspired a classic black and white wardrobe. I think the full series has a very High fashion James Bond-esq feel to them. This was also one of the first shoots I'd done with my new set of Strobe Lights and I really started to get a feel for what I was doing at this point.

Whenever I do any sort of Fashion Shoot I try to publish at least one or two images from each series on the web. Recently as I have started to use my Flickr, Modelmayhem, Facebook, blog, and DeviantArt more I have decided to share more of the variations from each shoot on the different sites.

This was one of my favorite shots from my shoot with Leslie Mckenna ( International Assassin ). Body painting was created by the absolutely amazing Trask and AKABody Art from Virginia. Makeup and hair were done by Lauren Palmer (Lady of Design)

One of my newer shoots with one of the models I've been shooting the longest, Camille-A-Ragdoll. Both of us are goth/metal people at heart but we decided to approach the world of fashion and marketing with a straight up Commercial feel. We've shot so many different styles together that its almost hard to believe we'd never done any commercial fashion stuff together.

This was also one of the first times I've really played with Layers and textured backgrounds in Photoshop and achieving the realism of the shadows was a big concern. Im very happy with the end results and hope you like it as well.

Absolute Mosh ; An interview with Alt / Fetish Model Mosh

She’s been a model for only a few years now but has already risen to the top echelon of the world of Alternative Modeling. She’s one of the most in demand models by designers, magazines, photographers and events, even gracing the header image of the most popular Modeling site on the internet earlier this year.

When she was 2 years old she was given the moniker Mosh, it suits her. It’s concise, direct and strong. While I am not sure her name has anything to do with an actual concert mosh-pitt, she shares the same frenetic pace, unpredictable power and a steady determined focus that one would find there.

She was born August 21st in the Soviet Union, now Russia, and moved at a young age to the States, raised mostly on the upper east coast (DC area). Mosh recently relocated to Los Angeles and is about to launch her own members site for the legions of fans to have yet another way of connecting with this Alt-superstar.

Jeff Cohn: What/Who inspired you to get involved in modeling?

Mosh: Nobody really inspired me, but the idea of a fetish image definitely did inspire me. I randomly came across modelmayhem.com in my senior year of high school, so I decided to join and see what I could do with my portfolio. I didn't think it would grow to what it is now, or that I would get to work with such great artists, but I did and I'm so glad I joined mm that one fine day in September.

Jeff Cohn: If you weren’t a model, what would you be doing?

Mosh: Probably studying design or business and focusing more on designing cosmetics and heels. Baking more. Having more of a social life haha. I'm not at all complaining, I enjoy every minute of my career as a model, from the beginning to the end of a process. I wouldn't trade it for anything.

Jeff Cohn: What drew you towards Alternative and Fetish modeling?

Mosh: Through the works of certain artists, I found something more than just erotic or interesting. There was something more to these images beyond just the obvious, and all of these images usually fit into the alternative of fetish category. Due to this intriguing mystery element, I was naturally drawn to fetish and alternative modeling. I personally cant stand ordinary fashion and typical all-American-beauty images. They can certainly be beautiful but they're not for me. The fabrics and materials that tie into fetish also drew me in. Since the first time I slipped into a latex dress, a corset, stockings, heels...I instantly fell in love.

Jeff Cohn: How much impact did having the header image on Model Mayhem have on your career?

Mosh: I'm not sure. It probably drew in a lot of people to my MM page haha! It was pretty cool seeing my face at the top of my favorite modeling networking site.

Jeff Cohn: How does it feel to know you inspire so many new models and fans?

Mosh: I am beyond flattered to hear from models and fans that they are inspired by me. I never thought my work would lead that way, but its an incredible feeling and it makes me want to work that much harder when producing new images.

Jeff Cohn: Do you have any funny or horrific photo shoot experiences you’d like to share?

Mosh: I have been pretty lucky with my photo shoot experiences, so none that were horrific in terms of the photographer or people at a shoot. I did have an interesting experience at an abandoned hospital with my photographer friend Lynxkarma and her photographer friend. It ended with a gun being pointed at my head by the police but thats a long story. It was thrilling to say the least.

Jeff Cohn: Do you have any advice for models just starting out?

Mosh: Be professional, be yourself, and give everything one hundred percent. Its typical advice but its also the best advice I could give. I have been surprised by certain models as to how they acted and how little they cared at the shoot. If you want to be a model, you need to show your abilities at its best at all times. You never know who will network you into something big based on your performance and ability.

Being yourself is probably the best advice to give overall next to being professional. Copying or ripping off someone else's style or look will never get you anywhere. There will always be the original and why would you want to be a replica of someone who already does it better? Be yourself means have your own style and act like yourself. You will shine through best by being your true unique self.

Learn to be self-reliant. Don't rely on other people for your work. If you can do your own makeup well and style yourself well then it doesn't matter if you cant find a stylist or the makeup artist can't make it. You will have full control of your look and not have to rely on anybody but yourself and the photographer.

Jeff Cohn: Do you have any tattoos? Plan on getting ?

Mosh: No tattoos whatsoever. Thing is, I absolutely love ink. I seem to have a thing for leg tattoos actually and my boyfriend is covered. However, I am so attached to my clean pale skin that at this time I don't have an urge to cover it with ink. I want to keep my skin the way it is. Perhaps later on or after my career is done I'll start covering myself hah!

Jeff Cohn: You recently judged your 2nd and attended your 3rd Catwalk Tragedy modeling competition; tell me a bit about that experience.

Mosh: The events are always fun, on stage and off. The contestants are always entertaining and I have a blast at the judge’s table. It’s always a privilege to get to view all kinds of different alternative looks and talents, therefore Catwalk Tragedy is an enjoyment to me.

Jeff Cohn: You’ve been very busy working on your membership site, tell me what fans can expect and what your own expectations are for it.
Mosh: Fans can expect beautiful high-quality images, videos, multiple updates a week, webcam group chats, one-on-one chats, tutorials, forum, personal calendar, and more to come!

This blog will share my perspective as a Free-lance professional full time photographer working in the Fashion world. I should probably tell you a bit about myself first so you know my background and where my perspective comes from. I am 34 years old, Born and raised in Southern New Jersey right outside Philadelphia, where I now live. I studied Marketing at Stockton College and since then have worked in a variety of Advertising, image related positions including Graphic Design, Web Design and Marketing Consultation.

In the Fall of 2003 I had the good fortune to work my Web Master job for the band KMFDM into a position on their US Tour, part of my duties on the road included Tour Photography and my work can be viewed on their 2003 DVD “WWIII”.

I started photographing models slightly before leaving for the KMFDM tour and picked up speed with it when I returned. My work originally was geared towards an Alternative, Fetish, Alt-Nude crowd, but has grown and changed direction over the years to focus more on High Fashion, Commercial Advertising, Catalogue, and Mainstream Fashion Modeling.

I wouldn’t say I have completely moved away from the Alt/Fetish world, however I have intentionally added a great deal of balance, bringing my work from “Goth” to “Edgy High Fashion” in it’s feel. I Love (and strive to create) dramatic, high end, unique and captivating imagery, weather its for Alexander Mcqueen or Hot Topic.

I am co-founder/coordinator of Catwalk Tragedy, An alternative beauty and fashion show started in Philadelphia currently embarking on a National Tour. I am also honored to be featured in the recently released coffee table book “Culture De Tragedie”

Of course I will be displaying my newest work in this blog, frequently offering behind the scenes and “what inspired the shot” narratives alongside my photos for the first time, but the main idea of “Deep Focus” will be far greater reaching then my own work. I plan on interviewing my peers, influences, and new talent. I will be attempting to interview Designers, Agents, Makeup Artists, Art Directors, Boutique and Salon Owners as well as Photographers and Models to give a well rounded and insider perspective from those in the Fashion Industry.
